Dear family and friends,
This week was a good one! I've got a lot done and had a
good time! We had a couple of really good spiritual experiences. We went over
to a guy’s house named Brandon. He's a member but is inactive. Our ward mission
leader suggested we text him and try setting something up a couple of weeks
ago. Last week we had a good lesson with him and this week we had an even
better one. We went over with Brother Johnson to talk about the Plan of
Salvation with Brandon. We started by asking him what he remembered about the
Plan of Salvation. Brandon having served a mission, basically laid it all out
perfectly in about 15 minutes so we got to go more into depth with it. It was
really good. When we got to the Atonement of Jesus Christ it was amazing. The
spirit was super strong in that lesson. I think Brandon was kind of just
sitting in awe the entire time. He said he hadn't felt the Spirit that strongly
in a very, very long time. I love the scriptures and all that they give us. It was because of the Book of Mormon that we
were able to bring the Spirit that strongly into that appointment.
Saturday was a very special day! We had a baptism! Libya
has been investigating the church since April, so almost a year. Her two kids
got baptized last spring and summer which is what sparked her interest. Her
kids weren't doing well in school and were getting into trouble frequently
until they met with the missionaries. Her daughter Andrea was the one who was
initially interested. In her words she
was slightly embarrassed about meeting with missionaries because she
"didn't think she would really dig it." It's now very apparent that
they did dig it. The gospel is for
everyone! Jesus got baptized after Andrea and now finally their mom did. She was a little nervous about getting
baptized initially because her parents are Catholic. She called and told them she was thinking
about getting baptized. Libya's parents
told her that out of all of their children she was the only one who actively
believed in God or even in anything. They were very proud of her for finding
something religious that she liked and felt good about. MIRACLES!!! When she got off of the phone she screamed to
Andrea and Jesus that she was going to get baptized! It was great teaching her. It was a fantastic
service! None of the pictures were taken
with my iPad, so I don't have any as of right now, but I'll get Elder Edwards
and the Hermanas to send me pictures so I can send them either later today or
next week if we don't run into them today. By the way, P-day will be on Tuesday next
week. We've switched up the way we do
transfers.
There were a few really funny experiences this week as
well. On Friday a member took us out to lunch. When we were walking into
Chili's this really drunk redneck guy came up to me and pointed at a tree and
asked, "What is that kind of tree called?" in a very drunk redneck
voice. Keep in mind, it's noon at this point.
I tell him it's a Palo Verde. He
says, "Correct! That's not what I thought it was called, but I'll trust
ya. It might have different names. You just won yourself ten bucks." He
reaches into his pocket, slaps a ten into the palm of my hand, and staggers
away. This funny experience turned into
a tender mercy. We went to dinner later
that day and knocked on the door. No one answered. We called, no answer. We
knocked again, no answer. We went around to the backyard to see if they were
back there, nobody. We called again, and they answered! We asked if they were planning on having us over
for dinner. We had confirmed earlier in the day but life got in the way and
they totally forgot about it. They apologized profusely and we told them it was
fine. Well, guess what happened to that
ten-dollar bill? We spent at Chipotle! It was good!
There's an Elder in the district that said he cuts hair. I looked at his haircut that he did himself
and a few other Elders whose hair he'd cut and they all looked like really good
haircuts. We went over on Wednesday during
lunch and he cut mine. I didn't take any pictures of it, but that's probably a
good thing. It was BAD! It was seriously the worst haircut of my
entire life. It was hilarious! It was super uneven and he missed some
spots. There was also this weird line
that went around my head where he hadn't tapered it very well. I mean, this was
a TERRIBLE haircut! I thanked him and we left.
Instantly I called Sister Montgomery in one of our wards and asked if
she could fix it. Fortunately for me she
said she was available the next evening.
She fixed me up so it looks good now, but you should have seen it
before. It was awesome!
We had dinner with a family earlier in the week. We went
over at 5:00 because that's when we normally eat. A guy answered the door and lets us in. It
doesn't smell like food is cooking, the table isn't set, and something seemed
off. We started chatting for a bit and
after about 10 minutes the guy was like, "Yah, we signed up for you to
come at 6:00.” Oh... Awkward... They
said we were welcome to just hang out until his wife got home. They also had a
roommate that was there. We were talking when the roommate was like, "Oh!
Your wife told me to cook the rice. Where is it?" Those two spent the next 15 minutes looking
for the rice before they finally called the guy’s wife. She told them she left
it on the counter next to the rice cooker and sure enough! There it was! The
husband came into the front room to chat with us and after about five minutes
the roommate came and asked if the rice cooker needed any liquid. *slap my palm
to my forehead* These two combined were the most hilarious people I've ever
seen when it came to cooking. The husband was like, "Yah! Of course it does!
Just pour some water in there." Finally,
6:00 rolls around and the wife came home. She asked if they had made the rice
and the roommate said yes. She asked how
much and he was like, "Oooooohhhh, maybe a cup and a half, two cups? I
don't know, I just did what looked like a good amount." Then she asked how
much water he put in. "Oooooohhhh, a couple of cups, maybe three or four
even, I don't know, a cup and a half?"
Well when did you start it? "Ooooohhh, I don't know, twenty minutes
ago? Maybe half an hour, I don't know." Well, obviously the rice didn't
really work out and they had stuff for Hawaiian haystacks. We sat down to eat and instead of rice they
used those dry chow mein noodles that you put on top. Then they had chicken and
I don't know how you get chicken that dry. Somehow they managed it though. It
was impressive. And then they had
tomatoes and pineapple. No gravy. It took a couple of glasses of water to wash
it all down. I could hardly swallow it
was so dry. The pills I've been taking give me dry mouth too. To top off all of this, they were a really
awkward family. I'm a weird guy and I just love awkward silences in these kinds
of situations. I was sitting there and
just loving it. Elder Edwards was
feeling pretty awkward I'm sure. There was literally a 5-minute silence where
everyone was eating and nobody knew what to say. It was seriously the greatest
dinner of all time! Hahaha! I felt so bad for the wife. She probably thinks that her husband and
roommate are idiots. It was a great
dinner!
That's about all that happened this week! Have a great
week everyone! I love you all. Life's
been great!
Love,
Elder Mullins
