Dear family and friends!
This week flew by! They always fly by, I guess, but I'm
still in awe every time Monday comes along. There were quite a few really fun
experiences this week. We were on foot until Saturday when we got more miles, so
we walked around quite a bit this week too. In the beginning of the week we
went over to the A.'s to help Sister A. out as she quits smoking. By the way, she is officially a non-smoker!
We went over probably three times this week and had lessons with her and gave
her spiritual boosts. It was really fun
to show a Mormon message or share a scripture and just get her pumped up! She
said in the beginning it was really hard, but now she doesn't crave cigarettes
anymore. The program we use is pretty effective. Because she followed all of
the steps exactly she quit smoking in just one week! I know that the Savior’s
Atonement is what made this possible for her. It has truly been incredible to
see this change happen within her. I didn't think the program would work as
well as Elder Jencks described it would, but it did work! So that's great!
We found this insanely golden investigator! She's been
away for the past few months and read the Book of Mormon in that time she was
away. Her name is Patricia. Her son, Angel, got baptized three or four
months ago, but he went inactive almost immediately. He's starting to come back
though, so that's great! We taught her the message of the Restoration of the
gospel and she just ate it up. She surprisingly doesn't know a whole lot about
the church, but she is very in tune with eye Spirit and can feel it testify of
what we teach her very well. At the end of the lesson she asked if she could be
baptized since she's on probation. When
we told her she could, she just lit up! We are very excited to teach her more.
She and her son go to church every Sunday, but for some reason they've been
going to the Miami Ward, so we need to figure that out and get them coming to Globe.
Patricia is awesome!
We also found a guy named Art. Art is 80 years old and is
super Catholic. He loves talking with
us, but I don't know that he's going to progress well. Of course, you never
know. I've taught some pretty tough
prospects that surprisingly have progressed. Art served in Korea in the army.
He had all sorts of stories about it. We
visited with him for about an hour before we had to get to our next
appointment.
The end of July/beginning of August is monsoon season
here. Oh, what's that? It doesn't rain
in Arizona? For about three or four
weeks out of the year it does! Man! On Friday we went with the scouts hiking
since there were less active members and one of our potential investigators
going. They were going to spend the
night, but we hiked up and then hiked down when we got to the top. As Elder Jencks and I were getting ready to
head back my hair stood on end and before I knew it-- SMACK!!! Lightning hit (I’m
not even exaggerating) about a hundred feet from us…maybe a hundred and fifty.
My ears were ringing so bad! It was insane how loud the crack of thunder was!
I've only been that close to lightning one other time and I was in a car. Wow,
that was a scary experience for a second. Then as we headed back it began to
pour. It took us about half an hour to get down the mountain. By the time we got to the car we were soaked
clear through. Even the backs of my
thighs were wet which never get wet when it rains! It was a super heavy
rain! I was scared I would fall in the
mud, especially since we did the hike in a shirt and tie since it was a
'proselyting activity.' I've never been that wet from a rain storm. I was
impressed. Haha!
The next day we woke up at 4:30 so we could get back up
to the boys by about 6:00 and spend the morning with them. We got there just as
Brother H. was starting a fire. It was about 60 degrees, but when you are wet,
it's pretty cold. Surprisingly, we got a pretty good one going. I didn't think
we could get one started since all the wood and everything around us was completely
saturated. When the sun came up it started getting pretty warm, so we didn't
need the fire. Elder Jencks and one of the young men, whose name is Jayden, and
I went and gathered huge handfuls of pine needles and stuck them on top. I've
never seen so much smoke coming from a campfire! Haha! Bro. H. thought it was pretty awesome, so he
came over with a huge armful and plopped it on top. We had fun with that for a
while. On the hike down I just hung out with Bro. H. since all the boys were
taking forever and Elder Jencks went with Jayden ahead of us. Bro. H. is a
pretty cool guy! We visited him and his family last night and it was a lot of
fun! His kids are hilarious. He was wrestling with a couple of his daughters
until one of them punched the other in the eye and she started to cry. Haha!
It's usually a mad house over there, but it's fun!
We also met with Trevor this week. We taught him the Plan
of Salvation, which he quite enjoyed. That kid is one of the most solid people
I've ever met with. We just need to get him to church and he'll be set. We're
going to invite him to be baptized this week, so hopefully that goes well. He has lots and lots of questions, so it's
always fun to teach him. It's kind of awkward when you're just sitting there
talking to someone and they won't talk to you. It's much more fun to teach
someone who is curious and asks questions.
There's a boy with autism in our ward named Thomas. One
of the things he always does is he tells you he loves you and expects you to
say it back. So it's kind of funny! When
Elder Parker was here he always told Elder Parker that he loved him, but never
Elder Jencks. When I got here to said it to me. On that hiking trip he finally
said it to Elder Jencks. I've never seen someone more happy to be told they
were loved! Haha! I think Elder Jencks
was getting kind of jealous! It was pretty funny!
That's been my week in a nutshell! I had a lot of fun
walking around. It's been super nice to be in a car the past couple of days
though. I think we'll still walk just once a week because it gives us a
presence. People definitely notice us. It's been interesting street contacting
people. It usually goes like this, “Hey! How are you brother?” “Hey! Pretty good! You guys are the ones that
walk everywhere, right? Man you're crazy! I saw you walking up fourth street.
You guys are nuts! That’s the steepest hill in Globe!”
“Yeah! No kidding! We're missionaries for the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and we share a message about Jesus Christ.” Yata yata yata, then they usually tell us
they aren't interested, but they see us and recognized that were dedicated to what
we do. I hope you all have a great week!
I am loving life out here in Globe! It's
pretty fun stuff!
Love,
Elder Mullins
