Wowy wow wow...my legs are sore!

Dear family and friends!

This week has been great! It seems like they just keep flying by quicker and quicker! I don't know where the time goes! It's kind of crazy to think that I've been out for nearly a year now. I'm just barely starting to get used to being a missionary and I’m finally beginning to understand what I'm doing. Hopefully I'll fully
understand everything in a year or so. That would be nice.

We did as much as we could and I felt like we were super busy this .week Unfortunately, we are only allotted certain amounts of miles per month and... We ran out... Yah. So, we called for more! We get 1500 per month.  We had gone 1690, and we got an additional 300 to cover us for 9 days. That totals out to about 13 a day. Our church building is the most central location of our area which is about 6 miles away. That means we can drive to the church, walk all day, and then drive home.  I'm not going to complain because it makes me healthier, but it's tough stuff sometimes! Globe is covered in hills. Not like little tiny ones, but super steep, super long, windy roads. The ENTIRE city! It's insane how many hills there are! So we either walk up or downhill, no flat, plus we cover the entire city of Globe meaning that we have towalk as far as 5-6 miles to get to a single appointment. So, if it sounds like we really didn't do a lot, it's because we didn't...Mostly we just walked. I think we average about 12-14 miles a day out here on foot.

There was a lesson we went to and we hoped to teach the A. family who are returning members. Sister A. is trying to quit smoking and we have an awesome program to help smokers quit. We got over there and
they weren't home, but their son was! His name is Zachariah. We talked to Zach for a bit and after we figured out that his parents wouldn't be home for a few hours we were getting ready to leave when he told us
he'd like to do a study with us. He's a member, but not active at all.  I'll describe him for you so you can kind of picture him.  He always wears a black tank top and he's pretty muscular. He has the sides and back of his head all buzzed and the top slicks back into a ponytail. He's got gauged ears and a tongue piercing. He's got several tattoos too. He doesn't look like the nicest guy. He's pretty pessimistic and just kind of hates the world. He doesn't have many friends and doesn't really respect his parents either. He's in his early 20's. We sat down with him and I was scrolling through all of my videos that I had downloaded when I came across one about charity. I had never seen it, but I felt prompted to have a lesson on charity with him since he isn't exactly the most charitable guy in the world. I showed this video and wow...That was one of the most powerful Mormon Messages I've ever seen. The Spirit was so insanely powerful I could hardly believe it. It put a lump in Elder Jencks throat, and made my eyes mist up a bit, and it brought tears to Zach's eyes. It was such an incredible lesson. After the lesson we read in 1 Corinthians 13 about charity and then in Moroni 7 too. I know that this lesson was inspired. It made Zach ask us if there is anything he can do to be more charitable.  We told him about a few service projects he could help us with.  We talked about how he can be better to his parents, do dishes, clean something, or just be a nicer person. He was super excited about it and he is really trying hard now! That lesson made a pretty big impact on him.

Now don't get me wrong, walking up and down hills all day long is pretty stupid sometimes, but it does have its advantages. It gives you mad thighs and calves, you notice things you never would in a car, and the best part is you see people on the streets to talk to! The only problem with Globe is that this week I ran into a grand total of 5 people on the street and only one talked to us. But this one was super awesome! His name is Keith. He is currently unemployed, is 20 years old, single, and on his own.  We found him broken down on the
side of the road. His back driver side shock was broken, so his frame came down onto his tire and shaved a bunch of the inside of the tire off. It looked pretty bad. We offered him help and he said he had it all taken
care of.  He was just waiting for a friend to come help him out.  We chatted with him for a bit. He looked a little scary, but he wasn't bad. He said that he felt like a lot of people are judgmental, because not only had no one stopped in the hour he had been there, but a few people drove by really slow with their window down, looked at him and then decided to drive off. He did have a few facial piercings and gauged ears along with some tattoos, but a lot of young people do nowadays.  We see it all the time and aren't intimidated by it. We deal with it so often... We talked to Keith for quite a while and I asked him about a tattoo he had that said 'family.' He isn't married, but he loves his siblings and mom. His mom was diagnosed with cancer at the end of last year and is fighting it pretty hard right now. He said that he loves her more than anything. We talked about how the gospel blesses families and about God’s love for us. He was a pretty cool guy. He wasn't interested, but it was definitely a good experience for him to have. If he continues to have experiences like that with the Church
I'm sure he'll eventually join. He's a pretty cool guy!

A couple of days ago I went on an exchange with Elder Svedberg.  He's a super funny guy! He normally serves out on the San Carlos Reservation, but he came down to Globe for the day. It was a really good day! I felt bad making him walk all over, but it's alright. We probably only did about 7 or 8 miles that day because we had a stake Pioneer Day celebration in the evening. We went to teach Sister A. the stop smoking program. Neither of us had ever taught it, so we made sure we had it down pat before we went over. We had a two hour
companion study, role playing through it. The lesson went super well and she is extremely committed to doing it! She'll quit, no doubt in my mind! I wish I'd known about this program two or three months ago, because there were a few people I could totally have taught about it, and then they could have been baptized! I'll be able to use it for the next year now! So yah! It'll be great! The lesson went really well and then we walked back to the church. They're one of the families that lives 4 miles away, so we probably actually did 10-12 miles that day. It was alright though. The celebration was super fun! There were a lot of people there. The Apaches from San Carlos made the fry bread, which was great! They made 420 of them. It was insane! It was super duper. I ate a ton that night.  Afterward we helped clean up and then we hung out with a bunch of the youth. Our whole zone was there, so there were a ton of missionaries and youth just chilling. It was good. We had a pull-up contest. I lost... Haha! I could only do 15, but there were a lot of people that did more than that; so that was lame, but oh well! I should probably work out harder so I can win! Or I can just stay the same and not really work out that hard... I think I'll do that.

Last night was really cool. We were walking somewhere and we walked under a bridge. All of a sudden about a hundred bats poured out of this bridge and flew off. It was nuts! I started taking pictures of the sunset, which was incredible, and more bats kept coming out! I'll have to send you all the picture of the sunset! It was a super good one! I could hardly believe the picture I was able to get out of my iPad.  I can't even imagine if I had a good camera. It was pretty cool.

Well, that's a bit about my week. I hope you all had a wonderful week too! I will be walking for the next 4 days, so keep me in your prayers. Hopefully my feet don't fall off and run away. I don't think that would really happen though, because they'd be too tired. Have a great week everyone!

Love,

Elder Mullins
